Antique Flow Blue Butter Pat Collection, Primitive Drawer and Handmade Napkins

This extraordinary collection brings together 25 antique butter pats decorated in a remarkable variety of Flow Blue patterns. The group is exceptional for the difficulty of assembling so many different designs in a single collection.

Flow Blue originated from an accident that occurred during the firing of English ceramics. The cobalt blue pigment used in the decoration migrated and diffused through the glaze as a result of vapors and salts in the kiln, creating blurred outlines, blue halos and a fluid, atmospheric appearance. What may originally have been considered a manufacturing flaw soon fascinated the public and became a deliberately sought-after decorative effect.

Over time, English potteries developed methods to reproduce this “flowing” blue. The resulting ceramics combined the influence of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain with English production intended for both domestic use and export. Their patterns included flowers, garlands, medallions, landscapes, pagodas, architectural scenes and ornamental borders.

Butter pats are small individual dishes traditionally used to serve butter. They reflect the refinement of Victorian table culture, when nearly every element of a formal meal could have its own specialized piece. In this collection, the significance lies not only in each individual butter pat, but in the extraordinary range of patterns assembled together.
