Mid-19th century terracotta amphora from Puglia, Southern Italy. Wheel-thrown earthenware with elongated dual handles and freehand vegetal slip decoration executed in traditional green ramina, a copper-based pigment historically associated with Southern Italian pottery. The partially glazed surface, exposed clay foot, and gestural botanical brushwork reflect the vernacular ceramic traditions of Grottaglie and the broader agricultural pottery production of nineteenth-century Puglia. Originally intended for domestic storage and everyday use, the vessel embodies the material honesty and sculptural simplicity characteristic of early Mediterranean utilitarian ceramics.
The softened patina and visible handwork give the piece a remarkably contemporary presence despite its age. Its restrained palette and organic form allow it to integrate naturally into both minimal and layered interiors. Beautiful displayed alone as a sculptural vessel, grouped with other antique Mediterranean ceramics, or used with branches and organic arrangements. A piece that carries the texture of time through surface, proportion, and craftsmanship.
