Set of Six Antique Hand-Painted Limoges Porcelain Berry Bowls, 1905

This refined set of six antique Limoges porcelain berry bowls was made in France around 1905 by Tressemanes & Vogt, a respected firm known for producing high-quality porcelain and exporting it extensively to the American market.

Berry bowls emerged as specialized serving pieces during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the Victorian era, fresh fruit—particularly strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and other berries—held an important place in desserts and formal table presentation. These small bowls were designed to serve fruit individually, elegantly, and in an orderly manner.

Their presence reflects a period when tableware became increasingly specialized according to each food and each stage of a meal. There were particular pieces for fruit, desserts, ice cream, sauces, and other elements of the table setting. Berry bowls were therefore more than small serving dishes; they formed part of a domestic ritual in which the presentation of food was considered as important as its preparation.

Each bowl is decorated with hand-painted fruit and botanical motifs. The fruits, leaves, and branches are rendered in a rich, naturalistic palette, creating the impression of a freshly gathered harvest. The variations from one bowl to another contribute to the liveliness of the set and reveal the character of hand-applied porcelain decoration.

Hand-painted decoration played an important role in Limoges porcelain during this period. The firm’s history places this set comfortably within the early twentieth century, consistent with the circa 1905 date.

Fruit was an especially popular subject in porcelain decoration of the period. In addition to its visual appeal, it suggested abundance, nature, and generosity at the table. The depiction of each fruit allowed the painter to explore different textures, colors, and stages of ripeness, transforming functional tableware into a small painted composition.

The set retains the original logic of a coordinated service: six pieces intended to be displayed together and used during a special meal.
