Vintage Hand-Painted Faience Pitcher from Talavera, Spain, 1970s

A beautiful vintage hand-painted faience pitcher from Talavera de la Reina, Spain, one of the country’s most celebrated ceramic centers. Decorated with vibrant cobalt blue, golden yellow, and green floral motifs against a soft ivory ground, the pitcher is finished with the traditional scalloped rim and graceful curved handle that have long distinguished Talavera pottery.

For centuries, Talavera de la Reina has been synonymous with exceptional craftsmanship. Beginning in the Renaissance and flourishing through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, its workshops produced ceramics admired by Spanish royalty, churches, and noble households. Even in the twentieth century, Talavera artisans continued to preserve these centuries-old decorative traditions, hand-painting every piece with the lively floral motifs and rich colors that remain instantly recognizable today.
