Vintage Russian Khokhloma Hand-Painted Lacquered Wood Salt Cellar and Dip Set, 7

Charming vintage Russian set of seven pieces, comprising one lidded salt cellar or serving jar and six small individual salt cellars. Each piece is made of lacquered wood and hand-decorated using the traditional Khokhloma technique.

Khokhloma is one of the most recognizable traditions of Russian folk craftsmanship. Originating in the Nizhny Novgorod region, it is known for wooden objects decorated with botanical motifs, leaves, flowers, and stylized fruits. Its iconic palette of red, black, and gold creates exuberant compositions inspired by the forests and natural landscape of Russia.

After painting, the pieces receive several layers of lacquer, producing a glossy finish with exceptional depth and a luminous appearance reminiscent of gilded metal. This effect, often called “Khokhloma gold,” is one of the defining characteristics of the tradition.
