Hand-thrown terracotta jug from Puglia, southern Italy, dating from the mid to late 19th century. Closely related in form to traditional southern Italian domestic pottery, the piece features a rounded body, cylindrical neck, twin side handles, and a restrained sculptural silhouette shaped for everyday use. Its compact proportions give it a particularly balanced and architectural presence.

The surface is covered in a warm honey-toned glaze with subtle variations in tone and texture produced during the firing process. The front is decorated with loose cobalt blue brushstrokes painted directly onto the body in an expressive, almost calligraphic gesture. Rather than functioning as precise ornament, the painted marks appear spontaneous and rhythmic, reflecting the informal decorative language found in many utilitarian ceramics from Puglia during the 19th century. The simplicity of the motif gives the piece a strong visual identity while preserving its rustic character.

Visible irregularities in the glaze, asymmetries in the form, and traces of handcraft reinforce the authenticity of the object and distinguish it from industrial ceramic production. The contrast between the earthy terracotta body and the vivid blue decoration creates a striking balance between raw materiality and painterly gesture.

Today, the jug can be used as a decorative object, small vase, or sculptural accent on shelves, kitchen counters, side tables, or within a collection of antique Mediterranean pottery. Its modest scale allows it to integrate easily into contemporary interiors while still maintaining a strong visual presence.
