Czechoslovakian Art Glass Cat's Head Vase and Bowl Set, Pink, 1960s
Exceptional pair of Czechoslovakian art glass pieces in a delicate pink tone, comprising a sculptural cat's head vase and a coordinating bowl. The set belongs to the celebrated tradition of mid-century Bohemian glass and reflects the imaginative, organic forms associated with Czechoslovakian art glass of the period.
The vase features an expressive sculptural silhouette with a wide upper opening and two lateral projections suggestive of a cat's ears. Rather than reproducing the animal literally, the design transforms a figurative reference into a modern, abstract, and highly characterful object. The bowl complements the vase with a lower, more enveloping presence, creating a harmonious dialogue between height, volume, and function.
The cat's head form is associated with designs attributed to Josef Hospodka, one of the notable figures in the development of modern Czechoslovakian art glass, known for his free-form shapes and sculptural approach to glass. This pair is presented as a work associated with that design tradition; no signature or documented maker's mark has been identified.
The glass features a layered construction associated with the Sommerso technique, whose name means "submerged" in Italian. A layer of colored glass is encased within another, creating depth, luminosity, and an almost mineral-like appearance. The pink color appears suspended within the glass, while the edges and thickness of the material capture and reflect light in changing ways.
