Lars Hellsten for Orrefors Corona Crystal Bowl, Sweden, 1970s

A sculptural vintage Corona crystal bowl, designed by Lars Hellsten for Orrefors in Sweden during the 1970s. The design is immediately recognizable by its substantial circular base and rhythmic crown-like rim, formed from broad geometric crystal panels separated by deep angular recesses.

Hellsten transformed a functional bowl into a small architectural object. The heavy clear crystal captures, divides, and reflects the light through each projecting panel, producing a striking optical effect from every angle. Its name, Corona, refers to the crown-like silhouette created by the raised sections around the rim. Documented examples of the design are identified as Orrefors model 4384.

Lars Hellsten joined Orrefors in the early 1970s and became one of the company’s important modern designers, creating crystal characterized by strong geometry, clarity, and sculptural weight. Orrefors, founded in the Swedish glassmaking region of Småland, achieved international recognition through collaborations between highly skilled glassworkers and leading twentieth-century designers.

Both decorative and functional, the bowl may be used for sweets, nuts, fruit, or small objects, although its bold modernist form allows it to stand beautifully on its own as a luminous piece of Scandinavian design. Its compact yet substantial presence makes it particularly effective on a dining table, console, bar, or within a collection of Swedish art glass.
