Set of Three Italian Blue Glass Apothecary Jars, Empoli Style, Late 20th Century
Set of three Italian Empoli-style blue glass apothecary jars in graduated sizes, dating from the late 20th century. Each vessel is made of richly colored blown glass in a deep, saturated blue, with a distinctive sculptural silhouette, rounded body, narrow neck and fitted glass lid.
The intense blue tone is characteristic of the dramatic colored-glass tradition associated with Empoli, Tuscany, one of Italy's most important historic centers for decorative glass production. Empoli became especially recognized for its vibrant translucent and opaque glass, bold forms, and functional decorative objects made for both domestic interiors and international markets.
These jars reinterpret the traditional apothecary vessel as an object of display. Their proportions suggest the refined order of an old pharmacy or cabinet of curiosities, while the saturated blue glass gives them a distinctly modern and luxurious presence. The rounded bodies are softened by the elegant verticality of their necks, and the removable lids complete the architectural quality of each piece.
Displayed together, the jars create rhythm and variation without losing cohesion; separated throughout a room, they can function as individual sculptural accents on a console, mantel, dining table, bookshelf or bar.
