Six Novelty Cocktail Napkins with Songs and Sheet Music, circa 1950
Set of six mid-century cocktail napkins, circa 1950, decorated with lyrics and musical notation from popular songs. Against an ecru background, the staves, musical notes, and lettering appear in dark blue, with matching edging. Each napkin features a different song, with its title at the top and the lyrics arranged beneath the musical lines.
The set includes “How Dry I Am!”, “Auld Lang Syne”, “She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain”, “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”, “Goodnight Ladies”, and “Oh! Susanna”. These six distinct designs bring together songs associated with celebration, friendship, humor, and communal singing. The musical notation allows guests to follow the melody as well as recognize the words; each piece serves as a small song sheet beside a cocktail glass.
Cocktail napkins developed a distinct identity during the early decades of the twentieth century, accompanying the expansion of cocktail culture and gatherings for drinks at home. By the 1920s and 1930s, versions decorated with witty illustrations and humorous motifs were already available. By mid-century, these small textiles had become part of the repertoire of entertaining accessories, alongside cocktail shakers, ice buckets, and bar glassware.
This set belongs to the tradition of novelty objects; pieces that introduce surprise, wit, or a conversation-provoking motif into an everyday function. Here, the device is musical. The napkins invite guests to recognize a song, recall its melody, and share it with others, making participation part of serving drinks.
The contrast between the simple background and the graphic arrangement of the musical scores unifies the set, while each song gives an individual napkin its own identity. A collection of six small textiles that preserves the participatory spirit of 1950s gatherings and brings music, memory, and humor to the aperitif ritual.
