Vintage Meriden Co. silver-plated egg cruet set comprising an ornate stand and six egg cups, with reference No. R92. A piece that tells the story of how breakfast developed its own language of objects, giving even a simple egg a considered place at the table.

An egg cup holds a soft-boiled egg upright so that the top of the shell can be opened and the contents eaten with a small spoon. Sets gathering several egg cups on a single stand, known as egg cruets, developed during the eighteenth century and continued to be produced throughout the Georgian and Victorian periods and into the early twentieth century.

These services belong to a table culture in which individual foods had their own specialized vessels. Alongside butter dishes, toast racks, small serving dishes, and open salt cellars, egg cups organized breakfast into a sequence of gestures; serving, sharing, opening, seasoning, and eating. The stand gathered the cups for a coordinated presentation before they were distributed among the diners. The repetition of six cups brought order and ornament to the table, turning a practical service into a tabletop composition.

The Meriden name is associated with the American silver-plating industry of Connecticut. Founded in 1852 and incorporated into International Silver Company in 1898, Meriden Britannia Company was one of its prominent manufacturers. The development of silver plating broadened access to elaborate table services and encouraged the production of specialized objects, reflecting the importance of hospitality and food presentation within domestic life.

Today, this set brings that same attention to a breakfast or brunch for six. Paired with contemporary dinnerware, linen napkins, or mixed porcelain patterns, it introduces a way of serving that invites people to sit down and spend time at the table. Its appeal as a collectible lies both in its ornament and in the memory of use it preserves; six vessels for six people, gathered around an everyday ritual.
