Wall Installation of 15 Antique Red Wood-Handled Jar Openers

Singular decorative wall installation composed of fifteen antique jar openers, each made with a red-painted wooden handle and an adjustable metal ring. Originally conceived as kitchen tools, these utilitarian objects have been collected and arranged to form a wall composition of striking graphic and sculptural presence.

The design answered a specific domestic need: gripping the metal lids of jars and preserves firmly enough to turn them with greater leverage. American patents from the 1930s and 1940s document variations of these mechanisms, developed alongside the growing use of sealed jars and home-preserved foods.

Repeated fifteen times, the object leaves the scale of everyday use and acquires another meaning: the handles create rhythm, direction, and an intense chromatic sequence. Detailed guidance for recreating the wall arrangement, together with the small mounting components required, is included.

Condition: Good, minor fading; very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear; metal rings show oxidation; some handles have minor cracks and patina. Overall installation approximately 40 in H x 20 in W; each opener approx. 4 in W x 6.2 in H.
